Description Starting salary to commence at $65,000 except in extenuating circumstances. General Statement of Job Attends and successfully completes an accredited Florida Criminal Justice Academy (FCJA) to obtain Florida certification as a law enforcement officer for the City of Venice.
City Expectations: Certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.
Duties & Responsibilities Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions: - Participates in FCJA classroom activities, scenarios, physical training and other assigned duties and tasks. Confers with supervisor on progress and problems concerning assignments.
2. Completes all graded work with a satisfactory score.
3. Successfully pass the prescribed and required firearms training course.
4. Successfully pass the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification Exam within thirty (30) days of graduation from the FCJA.
5. Learns and performs a wide variety of patrol and related duties as appropriate for the non-sworn position.
6. Assists the Training Unit as required.
Responsibilities : Responsible for following instructions and directions of assigned supervisors and instructors. Completes tasks correctly and in a timely manner while maintaining honor, demeanor and self-control to the satisfaction of the department's Training Manager. Responsible in work to assigned Venice Police Department supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education and Training - High school diploma or equivalent. An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or sixty (60) semester credit hours is preferred.
2. Must be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background check, with no conviction of a felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.
3. A citizen of the United States.
4. Possess a valid Florida driver's license or must obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire.
5. Be a minimum of nineteen (19) years of age.
6. Successfully complete a polygraph.
7. Successfully pass a drug-screening test.
8. Satisfactorily undergo a physical examination.
9. A veteran of an armed service of the United States must have a minimum of a general discharge.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required Skill Requirements : Capable of learning modern principles, practices, and procedures of police work. Ability to work independently of direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance. Skill driving vehicles and in using firearms in accordance with established guidelines. Ability to prepare clear, concise, comprehensive and timely reports, and maintain records and files. Possess excellent listening, speaking and communication abilities. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to remember names, faces and details of incidents. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City employees, governmental officials and the general public; maintaining the trust, faith and confidence of supervisory personnel. Ability to properly retain and dispense confidential information. Must be able to maintain a moral, ethical and legal standard commensurate with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and meet Florida Police Standards Board criteria. Possess a valid Florida Driver's license, free of any serious violations.
Requires a working knowledge of the current version of the Microsoft Office Professional software suite including proficiency with Word and Excel. Must have a basic understanding of the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Familiarity with CentralSquare Software applications based on an iSeries system is preferred. Working knowledge of current versions of Internet browsers and Microsoft Outlook is also highly recommended. Ability to learn specific computer applications used in the Department.
Physical Requirements : Excellent physical condition, strength, and ability. Ability to stand, walk, run, lift, pull, push, hear, speak, twist, turn, bend, and crouch. Position requires visual acuity. Reasonable accommodation will be considered for individuals with physical disabilities.
Supplemental Information Working Conditions : Work is primarily performed in a police training academy environment including classrooms, emergency vehicle operations, firearms, and outdoor physical agility course.
