Job Description

Position Summary

The Mary Anne McPhail Dressage Chair in Equine Sports Medicine Research Assistant will aid the Chair/PI in planning and performing equine sports medicine focused clinical, gait analysis, and/or benchtop research. 

Responsibilities will include:

1) Plan and perform equine sports medicine focused clinical and gait analysis. This can include working with top equine and human athletes to perform and analyze gait data, muscle function, tack fit, rider/horse interactions, and endocrine function. 

2) Benchtop research including ELISAs, Western Blots, RTqPCR, and "omic" analyses, on blood, synovial fluid and tissue.

3) Supervise and train graduate, undergraduate, and/or DVM students in research projects. 

4) General lab management including calendaring, ordering, managing research budgets, writing (grants, manuscripts and AUF’s) and general lab tasks.

The candidate will be willing to work with multiple veterinary species, but particularly horses. Candidates should have experience with benchtop assays (ELISAs, RNA preparation, Western Blots, PCR etc.) and/or familiarity with gait analysis (with a slight preference for the latter). A valid Driver’s License and transportation is required.

Experience with horse related research is desired but not required.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program (BA or BS) in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with horse related research is desired, but not required.
  • Comfortable handling horses or a willingness to learn. Experience with either benchtop techniques or gait analysis. Experience with coding (eg. R, Matlab, etc). Ideally one-three years of experience in a research or clinical setting. Strong organization capabilities (including calendaring), strong writing and computer skills, good attention to detail and independent problem-solving skills.
